Cast includes Charlotte Gainsbourg, Stellan Skarsgard, Stacy Martin, Shia Labeouf and Jamie Bell. Sex scenes will be with body doubles and visual effects, production notes.

Lars von Trier will tomorrow (Tuesday) start the 11-week shoot for his anticipated Nymphomaniac, which is set for release in 2013.

The shoot will take place in Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany and for a shorter period in Flanders, Belgium.

The story is about a woman named Joe, a self-diagnosed nymphomaniac, who recounts the story of her life (and her erotic adventure from birth to age 50) to a charming bachelor, Seligman (played by Stellan Skarsgard). Charlotte Gainsbourg will play Joe, with Stacy Martin as young Joe.

The cast also features Shia LaBeouf, Jamie Bell, Connie Nielsen, Mia Goth, Jens Albinus, Severin von Hoensbroech, Peter Gilberg Cotton, Nicolas Bro, Tabea Tarbiat, Janine Romanowski, Jesper Christensen, Tania Carlin, Felicity Gilbert and Shanti Roney.

She tells Seligman her story in eight chapters.

The film will be prepared in different versions “due to reasons of censorship,” the filmmakers noted. Today’s release announcement also noted that “the sex scenes in the film will be performed with the help of body doubles and visual effects” — following Labeouf’s claims last week that he would be shooting unsimulated sex.

The filmmakers said in a statement: “With Nymphomaniac, Lars von Trier wishes to transfer, in film, previously unseen qualities from the world of literature. A monumental film about the female erotic desire, with claims and counter-claims, conflicting angles, and moral or perhaps precisely immoral observations. Because through the help of the main story, the film allows for the most strident arguments and wildest thesis, and exactly thereby it creates space for the discussion of it all – the film itself, the human beings, life!

Producers are Louise Vesth for Zentropa Entertainments in co-production with Bettina Brokemper for Zentropa International Köln, Marianne Slot for Slot Machine and Bert Hamelinck for Caviar and with support from The Danish Film Institute, Filmstiftung Nordrhein-Westfalen, Eurimages, Deutscher Filmförderfonds, Nordic Film & TV Fond, Belgian Tax Shelter and in cooperation with DR and Film i Väst and with participation from Arte, Canal+ and The West Danish Film Fund and with development support of the Media Programme.
